Accessibility Links and Resources
As an e-Learning Developer, I am enthusiastic about digital accessibility. It has been a goal of mine to create opportunities to share what I am learning about making the world wide web an information sharing space designed for all people.
The following are resources that inform my work and aid in my accessibility testing practice.
Accessibility Resources
Accessibility for Section 508 Conformance
https://www.section508.gov/create/
The U.S. government's Section 508 website provides free text and multimedia training for meeting WCAG 2.0 Level AA conformance for digital accessibility of information communication technology (ICT)
This site was my starting point for learning about document accessibility and how digital accessibiltiy and universal design overlap.
Accessibility Certification for Section 508 Conformance
https://training.section508testing.net/
For certificates and extended training from the Section 508 government site, create a log-in for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)'s Office of Accessible Systems and Technology
This is where I am currently working through certification programs, including the Trusted Tester certification
Please note: The site and the training within are being refreshed for 2024. Any training not complete by the 2023 calendar year will not carry over in 2024. All program progress must be restarted in January.
Universal Design
https://universaldesign.ie/what-is-universal-design/
Ireland's National Disability Authority Centre for Excellence in Universal Design site shares comprehensive information about the 7 Principles of Universal Design developed by a working group of architects, product designers, and environmental design reseearchers led by the late Ronald Mace of North Carolina State University. The Universal Design Institute was named in his honor.
The site provides information and guidelines about each principle, with case studies, examples, benefits, and information on policy and legislation.
Human-Centered Design
The U.S. government's 18F Methods site focuses human-centered design tools and practices. The tools and practices are organized by cards with instructions for adoption into projects.
18F publishes quality guides in the worldwide public domain for accessibility, agile, content, de-risking, design methods, engineering, products, and user experience.
Usability Heuristics
https://www.nngroup.com/articles/ten-usability-heuristics/
Housed on the Nielsen Norman Group site, this article provides an overview of Jakob Nielsen's 10 general principles for interaction design, also called usability heuristics.
Downloadable summary posters of the usability heuristics are included at the end of the article.
Plain Language
https://www.plainlanguage.gov/about/definitions/
A U.S. Government website that provides policy information, definitions, explamples, and trainings about presenting information in plain language for all users to access.
Downloadable summary posters of the usability heuristics are included at the end of the article.
Mobile-Friendly Accessibility
https://designsystem.digital.gov/?dg
A U.S. Government website that provides information for accessibility of mobile-friendly websites.
Accessibility Testing Tools
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Evaluation Methodology (WCAG-EM)
https://www.w3.org/WAI/eval/report-tool/
I use this tool to guide and document a report about web accessibility testing of Computer-Based Training or Web-Based Training.
Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (WAVE)
https://wave.webaim.org/extension/
Created by Web Accessibility in Mind (WebAIM) and the Institute for Disability Research, Policy, and Practice of Utah State University, WAVE is a Chrome, Firefox, and Edge extension for evaluating accessibility issues in-browser.
Accessible Name and Description Inspector (ANDI)
https://www.ssa.gov/accessibility/andi/help/install.html
ANDI is a Section 508 compliance testing tool that runs on web browsers. It provides automated detection of accessibility issues and reveals what a screen reader should say for interactive elements.
Color Contrast Analysis
https://www.tpgi.com/color-contrast-checker/
I use this tool to test for color contrast of adjoining colors throughout a design
Readability Editor
I use this tool to check for readability of text and to guide editing for plain language.
Photosensitive Epilsepsy Analysis Tool (PEAT)
Created by the Trace Center of the University of Maryland Initiative for Digital Accessibility, PEAT is a free downloadable application that helps identify seizure risk in video or animated content.
Empathy Resources
Accessibility Personas
https://alphagov.github.io/accessibility-personas/
Run by the Accessibility team at the Government Digital Service (GDS) of the United Kingdom, the team created 7 accessibility personas to represent a diversity of user needs and reasonable approaches for meeting them for digital accessibility.
Understanding Hearing Disability
https://deafnav.com.au/understand (Australia)
Based in Australia, Deaf Nav provides resources and information to help people understand the experiences of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community.
